Obituary

Winnifred Lillie Bosak Susan
July 18, 1923 - May 3, 2024

Winnifred "Winnie" Susan, 100, left this world on May 3, 2024, to be with her Lord and her husband Edwin E. Susan, their son, Edwin "Sonny" Susan, and many beloved family and friends in heaven.

Another one of our "Greatest Generation" is departed to heaven to be free of the struggles of this world. She was born July 18, 1923, to parents Louis Bosak and Albina Ripple Bosak Kovar of Czech heritage. Winnie attended Brown Community School and went through the 7th grade twice as she loved school so much. There was no high school in the area, only in Richmond, and she did not have the resources to continue there. She often mentioned that she wanted to be a nurse, but did not have the opportunity for education. At age 14 she went to work as a caregiver/domestic for a local family to support herself. She always had a loving, kind, generous caregiver heart, putting others before herself.

She married Edwin on Feb. 14th, 1942, at age 18 and they lived with his mother, Frances (Kasparek) Susan, on the Susan Farm on Dannhaus Road.  After Edwin's passing ('01) , Winnie lived on the farm alone for 7 years, until she moved into Needville ('07) where she enjoyed being closer to friends and activities.   She had enjoyed farming alongside Edwin, a full-time partner with the crops and animals, as a farm wife and mother.   They enjoyed raising all their own food:  cattle, hogs, sheep, 2 big gardens/year, canning, and country cooking. For fun they did much volunteering, dancing, dominoes, and bingo playing. They were happy to be at home and were not travelers. They were active members and volunteers with SPJST Lodge 81, RVOS,  and St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Edwin and Winnie were both of Czech heritage. Czech was spoken at home with grandma, and Winnie always enjoyed chattering it with her Czech friends. Winnie also passed many hours on her hobby of embroidery which produced many beautiful pieces of linen artwork.

While she had slowed down a bit the past few years, she found the energy to get to church and to any and all social events where she might see an old friend or make a new one.  She had a warm smile and a loving heart for everyone she met and as a definite extrovert, had an amazing gift for making friends. Winnie was active and enjoyed a good mind until a stroke in Feb. 2022, which affected her memory and eyesight.

She will also be welcomed to heaven by brother, Leroy Bosak, and wife Charlotte Bosak;  brother Ladis Charles Bosak (d.'52) and wife  Lydia Uherek Bosak;   Sister Darlene Blinka (d.'19) and husband Alvin Blinka, Sr.;  the Kovar step-sisters and brothers, and special step-sister/friend Lydia Kovar (from her mother's second marriage to John Kovar).  Winnie is also reunited in heaven with her special friend and caregiver Gloria Wood.

She is survived by daughter Karen Rust of San Marcos, special bonus great granddaughter Chelsee Rust Hamilton, husband Bryce and son Everett;  and by the Susan, Bosak, Blinka, Kovar, Kasparek, and Stupka nieces and nephews; and numerous other family and friends, including her church family at St. Paul's Presbyterian, at SPJST, and the Needville Senior Citizens center.

Many thanks to the wonderful caregivers who took care of Winnie for the past few years in her home:  Debra, Tina, Nancy, Lorial, Visiting Angels Agency (Angleton), and Divinity Hospice (Lake Jackson), for 18 months.
