Wiley
Amick
Jul 25, 1927 — Oct 20, 2024
Richmond
Wiley Amick kept his promise to meet Jean in the morning just inside the Eastern Gate of Glory on Sunday, October 20th. Born July 25, 1927, Wiley was the youngest child of Earl Clifton and Clyda Mae (Hines) Amick. His early childhood was spent in Flomot and various other west and south Texas towns while his family farmed. At the age of twelve, the family moved to Ontario, California, where he later worked during high school years in Upland lemon and orange houses packing citrus. Wiley served in the Army Air Corp during WWII-1945 to 1947-in Nawsarwak, Greenland.
Attending the Foursquare church, he met the love of his life, Eleanor Jean Slagle and they were married in 1948. Wiley was a quick study and held jobs in manufacturing, drafting and aerospace R & D. In 1963 the aerospace industry moved to Houston, Texas, and Wiley found employment at the U.S. Post Office in Upland, CA. He retired from that service in 1990. He and Jean loved to travel and most often used a small RV for their camping trips to 48 states and later traveled to Hawaii and Alaska. After retirement, they fulfilled their dream of traveling to Europe and Great Britain. Travel was necessary with one child in California, one in Texas and one in Florida or Georgia or North Carolina!
Wiley and Jean were interested in genealogy and began researching family histories during their many trips across the country. They discovered that their research took them back to origins of Scotland and Germany. Wiley and Jean provided their siblings with a bound copy of history and related documentation.
Wiley was always good with his hands and built their first home with the help of his brothers-in-law. He later proved to be a capable carpenter, plumber, landscaper and concrete layer as he and Jean moved from Upland to Rancho Cucamonga to Hemet, CA, then finally moving to Richmond, TX in 2004. At Jean's death in 2012, he moved to the Del Webb subdivision; at 92 years old he decided his pergola was just not wide enough for his liking, so he added another 9 feet to it by himself.
Wiley was a husband, father, grandpa and Papa to his family and filled every role exceedingly well. Wiley's greatest legacy is the Christian faith he instilled in his three children.
Wiley was raised in church and faithfully served God all through his life. He was Sunday School superintendent, worship leader and pianist (when necessary) in the First Assembly of God church in Upland. He worshiped at Friendship Church in Richmond and volunteered locally at Helping Hands, the Convoy of Hope and sang with the Golden Heir Choir at Calvary Baptist Church. A tough moment for Wiley was when he had to give up driving at 95 after fracturing his pelvis.
Wiley was preceded in death by his loving wife Jean and all of his siblings (Glen, Elmer, Clyde, Edna, Valda, Ophelia) and their spouses (Jewell, Marie, Laura, Johnny, Herbert and Charlie). He is survived by his sons Larry Amick and wife Tita in San Jose, CA, David Amick and wife Katherine of Nashville, TN; his daughter Nancie Rain and husband Richard; six grandchildren Wesley Amick and Rebekah Crow, Benjamin Amick and Emerson Conceicao (Elton), Leigh Hinton (Sean) and Doug Rain (Taylor); eight great grandchildren Stewart and Patrick Crow, Hunter, Peyton and MacKenzie Hinton, Bryson and Benjamin Rain, and Mateo Conceicao. Wiley is also survived by many nephews, nieces.
The family is certain that Wiley entered into Heaven and heard the words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant".
We are thankful for Wiley's friends who gave him many hours of games, music and fellowship - he loved you all. We thank the many employees at Clayton Oaks and Fairmont Hospice for their kind care in Dad's final months.
