W. Lee "Dub" Schmidt was born September 7, 1938, in Rosenberg, TX, to Herman John Schmidt and Elsie Wendt Schmidt. He passed away on the evening of Monday, June 28, 2021, in Katy, Texas, after eight months of illness brought on by a Covid diagnosis in November 2020.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Barbara Jean Wenzel Schmidt; and his sister, Bobbie Gene Schmidt. Survivors include son, Kevin Schmidt and wife, Deanna, of Katy, TX; daughter, Vickie Schmidt Vickery and husband, Craig, of Katy, TX; brother, Glynn Schmidt and wife, Bernice, of Needville, TX. He leaves behind 4 grandchildren: Danyel, Jefferson, Kathryn, and Jonathan.

On July 25, 1964, Dub married the love of his life, Barbara Jean Wenzel. They were married 56 years prior to her death in December 2020. The two were inseparable throughout their years together; the true love they had for one another was always on display. They adopted two children: Kevin in 1969 and Vickie in 1974.

Community service was of utmost importance to Dub Schmidt. From 1978 to 1982 he gained some notoriety when he served as a Fort Bend County Commissioner. He worked for the County of Fort Bend both before and after being elected Commissioner. He retired on December 31, 1996, after decades of service to the county in which he lived and loved.

Dub and Barbara probably most enjoyed their Dancing Days together. The two of them loved to dance. They would spend many evenings at the KC Hall in Needville, two-stepping whilst enjoying each other's company.

Dub followed his parents' example and was active within his church, Immanuel. He was a member of the Consistory, Brotherhood, often served as usher, along with other church activities and fundraisers. He always looked forward to his Sunday mornings visiting with his close church friends, enjoying a coffee and especially the conversation.

Dub also volunteered for decades for the Needville Volunteer Fire Department, eventually being named an honorary member. He and Barbara never missed a NVFD fundraiser, often volunteering to work in addition to being an avid bidders at the auctions.

Dub and Barbara also loved to travel. After they had fulfilled their goal of visiting all 50 states, they voyaged over to Europe. They got to see and enjoy visiting Germany, which was a life dream of his.

After retirement, Dub spent lots of his time enjoying the game of golf. He and his friends would have tee times set up 2-3 times a week. The game of golf not only kept him active but allowed opportunity to visit with friends and enjoy his second favorite sport, "shooting the bull".

Dub and Barbara both lived and breathed all Needville High School sports. Both NHS alumni, they never ceased to show their pride for their dear Blue Jays. The two of them devoted many hours on the road traveling all over Texas to supporting their home team, no matter the sport.

Dub was a big man with an even bigger heart. His family always joked that he never met a stranger his entire life. His jolly disposition and gift for gab was a hallmark characteristic. He appreciated and enjoyed all the time spent with family and friends throughout his 82 years. He was the epitome of the ideal Family Man.

Memorials may be given in his memory to Immanuel Evangelical Church, 9018 Church Street, Needville, TX 77461 , and/or to the Needville Volunteer Fire Department, 3323 Richmond Avenue, Needville, TX  77461 .
