Virginia Wessendorff Davis Scarborough passed away peacefully on November 16, 2023 at her daughter's home in Angleton, Texas. She was 102 years old.
Virginia was born on May 6, 1921 to Sydney Warren and Lizzie Wessendorff Davis in Richmond, Texas. As a fifth generation Texan, she was a descendant of two early Texas families who settled in Fort Bend County and were members of Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred Colony. She was raised on Rivercrest Farm outside of Richmond. She attended local schools, graduated from Richmond High School in 1938, then Sam Houston State Teachers College in 1941. While in college, Virginia met her future husband, A. Y. "Sonny" Scarborough. Virginia and Sonny married in 1942. Together they raised a family of five children and lived in Richmond most of their lives. When her youngest child was in school, Virginia began her teaching career which lasted 21 years in Lamar CISD, teaching English and reading in middle and junior high schools. She was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1985 at Lamar Junior High School.

Virginia's passion was genealogy. She spent hours in libraries, courthouses and cemeteries, documenting information about her ancestors, finally compiling the information into genealogical record books for her family. She loved Fort Bend County and in her later years became known as a local historian. She volunteered at the Genealogy Department of the George Memorial Library. As a volunteer she compiled a list of historical markers in Fort Bend County. Her favorite project was documenting an inventory of all the people buried in Fort Bend County cemeteries. For her volunteer efforts, Virginia received the Fort Bend Women of the Year Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2002, the Fort Bend County Historical Commission Heritage Award in 2010, and the DAR Excellence in Community Service Award in 2014.
