Obituary

Dr. Thomas Herbert Mann

February 6, 1953 – June 26, 2024

Dr. Thomas Herbert Mann, beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully at home after a fierce battle with pancreatic cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Mann. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Lisa Mann; daughters Kate Shanin Mann and Sarah (Kara) Lesli Mann and her fiancé, Joel Moder-Ashbourne, beloved brother and best friend, Charlie Mann, and mother, Jocelyn Mann.

Tom was blessed with a keen intellect, a wonderful sense of humor, a wealth of musical talent, and a bottomless supply of kindness and generosity. He was born in Los Angeles, California, and attended Pacific Palisades High School and UCLA before moving to Houston to complete his Bachelor of Science, Master of Science in Psychology, and Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology. He opened Mann Psychological Consulting in 1998 and touched countless lives in his work with individuals struggling with behavior disorders and developmental disabilities. Some of these clients looked forward to hearing Dr. Mann play guitar and getting them to sing along as part of their sessions with him. In later years, due to his silver hair and beard and his kindness, more than one of his clients asked him if he was Santa Claus, to which he always replied, "I'm not the real Santa, but I am one of his helpers. I will tell him that you've been good."

Tom was a family man who took great joy in going on fishing trips with his beloved brother and watching movies with his family. He played guitar almost all his life and loved performing in bands over the years. One might say the guitar brought him his family, as it played a huge role in his wooing his wife. Tom lived in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Farmington, New Mexico, but he planted himself in Richmond, Texas when he married Lisa, and he lived and worked in the greater Houston area for most of his life. He will be profoundly missed by the many people whose lives he touched. Special thanks go to Tom's sister-in-law, Ranelle Krejci, the caring nurses and doctors of M.D. Anderson Hospital, and the compassionate staff of Doctor's Choice Hospice. The wealth of compassion and the prayers of family and friends gave tremendous comfort at a difficult time.

Tom did not want a formal funeral, preferring instead a memorial gathering of family and close friends to be scheduled at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family humbly asks for your donations to the Dr. Thomas H. Mann Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships to help students with financial need pursue degrees in psychology. Please send donations to:
