Dr. Stanley Earl Thompson passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at his home in Richmond, Texas on September 6, 2016. To say he lived a full life in his 98 years is an understatement. Dr. Thompson, or "Frump" as he was known to his loved ones, was born in the Pacific Northwest on April 21, 1918. His early life was filled with hard work and dedication to serving others. Graduating high school at 15, Dr. Thompson labored as a lumberjack until he could afford to enroll in Walla Walla University. After two years of working his way through school, Dr. Thompson was drafted by the U.S. Army and served until the war's end, rising to the rank of Sergeant Major. During his time in the service, he attended a party at a roller rink, where he met and fell in love with schoolteacher Lila Rapsilver, a native of Brookshire, Texas. After a six-week whirlwind courtship, Lila and Frump enjoyed a happy, productive, and faith-filled marriage for the next seven decades. After the war, Dr. Thompson completed his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Houston, graduated top of his class from Loma Linda Medical School, and moved to Richmond, Texas to begin his medical practice. From 1952 until 2013, when he retired at the spry age of 95, Dr. Thompson represented the best of full service medicine. Known for his uncanny ability to diagnose patients and for his gentle bedside manner, in his sixty years of service to the community, Dr. Thompson delivered over 4,500 babies, including some of his secretaries, a 14 lb baby, and several sets of triplets. Dr. Thompson served as the team physician for the Lamar Consolidated football team for over fifty years, donated his time and resources to the local jail system, was well known for his house calls, and even accepted chickens and jam in lieu of payment for his services when necessary. In addition to his full work schedule, Dr. Thompson found time to travel to 92 countries, walk two miles every day, and serve as a delegate to the American Medical Association for almost 20 years. Always a quick wit, Frump never met an Aggie joke he didn't like, or tell.
He is preceded in death by his wife Lila Grace Thompson and his son Dr. Steven Douglas Thompson, with whom he shared a medical practice. He is survived by his daughter Judy Erleene Thompson, son Terrell Edwin Thompson, grandchildren Steven Douglas Thompson, Jr. (wife Anabel and children Carolyn Bel and Sam), Dr. Maley Holmes Thompson (husband Robert Passberger), and Harry Holmes Thompson (wife Yuridia), and close family friend Douglas Lea Stahl.
