Richard "Dick"
Slocum Werner
Mar 24, 1931 — Jun 30, 2025
Richmond
Richard "Dick" Slocum Werner, age 94, of Richmond, Texas, died peacefully at his home on June 30, 2025.
He was born in Winslow, Arizona, on March 24, 1931, to Frances Alma Atkinson Werner and Charles Henry Werner. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, in 1953. He then served in the Army in Furth, Germany. Upon returning, he received his Master of Business administration from Texas A&M University in 1957. He became a certified public accountant in 1958. After working in several different firms, he finally went into private practice and continued working until he was 94.
He was married to Ruth Isabel Blasdel in 1955, and they were married for 60 years. He was a wonderful father to 2 children - Harold and Debbie.
Ruth and Dick traveled all over the world – over 50 trips to Europe – mostly Germany and Austria. And he was proud to say that he was in all 50 states. They traveled often with college buddies, and family. He was especially fond of the trips they got to take with their grandson James, and in later years to Costa Rica to visit his daughter.
Dick was a consummate football fan! He loved his Texas Aggies, and he had season tickets to the Houston Oilers games since their inception in 1960, and later the Houston Texans. He even traveled to multiple away games – sometimes suffering through snowy games for the love of football.
He was also a marathoner – in the 1980's and 90's he ran over 7 marathons, some locations were Nova Scotia, Cleveland, Duluth, Chicago and of course Houston. He was passionate about (and addicted to) jogging.
He was close to his brothers - sharing beer, philosophy, European travel – and of course football.
He was grateful for the long full life and the many blessings he had. He will be dearly missed, but he will live on in our hearts, and we are so happy that he is reunited with Ruth in Heaven.
He is preceded in death by his 3 brothers Eugene Douglas Werner, Frederick Lloyd Werner, Charles Godfrey Werner, and his wife Ruth Isabel Werner. He is survived by his son Harold Lloyd Werner (wife Linda), daughter Deborah Suzanne Fuqua (husband Bill), sister-in-law Betty Werner, grandson James Lloyd Werner, 4 step grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
The Visitation will be held at Garmany Carden Funeral Directors Chapel, 1201 4th Street, Rosenberg, Texas 77471, on Wednesday July 9th from 5-7 pm.
The Funeral Service will be held at St. John's United Methodist Church, 400 Jackson Street, Richmond, Texas 77469, on Thursday July 10th at 10:00 am, followed by a Graveside Service with full military honors at Morton Cemetery, Richmond TX.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John's UMC or the George Foundation.
Dick requested that attendees wear red, white, and blue, or Columbia blue - the Houston football teams colors - or wear a Texans jersey or t-shirt! This will be a celebration of his life!
