Dr. Richard Arlin Cannon, M.D.
1931 - 2024
Dr. Richard Arlin Cannon, M.D. 1931-2024 With great sadness, we report the passing of our father, Richard Arlin Cannon, M.D., on June 24, 2024, at age 92. But with joy and pride, we remember his life and how he enhanced the lives of others. To celebrate his life and legacy, a Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the First Presbyterian Church of Rosenberg, located at 1400 Old Radio Lane, Rosenberg, Texas, 77471, directed by Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors, Inc. at 1201 4th Street in Rosenberg, Texas.
Richard was born December 16, 1931, in Brady, Texas, to Stockton and Evelyn Cannon of Menard, Texas. Richard "Dickie" Cannon grew up in Menard, Texas, and enrolled in Baylor University in Waco, Texas, in 1950. In 1953, Richard married Barbara Sue Bruton of Menard, Texas. In 1957, he graduated from Baylor College of Medicine and then spent 3 years in the Baylor Pediatric Internship and Residency Program. He became certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in 1962, having served in the U.S. Air Force for 2 years in Harlingen, Texas. Richard and Sue had 4 children: Paul Lewis in 1956, Cristianne in 1958, Cathryn in 1960, and Daniel Stockton in 1965. He practiced pediatrics for 20 years in Wharton, Texas at the Outlar & Blair Clinic and another 20 years in private practice in Richmond/Rosenberg, Texas. He retired in 2002. In 1993, Richard married Sonja D. Zunker of Rosenberg, who passed away in 2015.
Richard created a burgeoning medical practice, beloved by his patients and families. Involved in church activities all his life, he sang in church choirs and treated the congregations to solos with his beautiful baritone voice. He enjoyed many interests, which he shared with his children, including golf, music, snow skiing, painting, tennis, writing, building model airplanes, and collecting antique patent medicine bottles and antique medical paraphernalia. He became a scholar of Texas History and a published author of articles in antique bottle periodicals.
Richard is survived by his 4 children: Paul Lewis Cannon and his wife Kelly, Cristianne Richardson and her husband Richard, Cathryn Armendariz, and Daniel Stockton Cannon and his wife Christine. Richard's grandchildren are Kyle Cannon, Matthew Stephenson, Emily Rials, and Lindsay Stephenson-Jones. Richard's great grandchildren are Brandon Rials, Brody Jones, and Addison Rials. He is also survived by his sister, Barbara Rue Kothmann and her husband, Carleton Kothmann, who reside in Menard, Texas.
The Cannon family wishes to acknowledge and thank K.B. Monroe of Richmond, Texas, for her dedication and friendship to our father and our family. We also wish to thank Debora Donahue of Wharton, Texas, and her team of caregivers for providing our father with outstanding care and our family with tireless support.
In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the Texas Children's Hospital of Houston, Texas at https://www.texaschildrens.org/
