Obituary

Nathaniel "Nat" Martin Cartmell passed away on Monday, August 31, 2020, in Needville, Texas, after a courageous fight against cancer. He was 81 years old at the time of his passing.

Nat is survived by his wife of 42 years, Virginia, and their children, Terry Strong, Renee Riggs, and Tana Hicklin, also by his brother Alan Cartmell. His living grandchildren are John (Aimee) Elder, Dane Strong, Kinsley Strong, Jason Riggs, and Anthony Bastida. His living great- grandchildren are Cade and Hayes Elder.

Nat was born in Fort Worth, Texas, and moved to La Porte, Texas, during his early childhood. In his teens he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and fought in the Korean War and participated in Operation Redwing. Nat remained a patriot to his final breath.

Following his enlistment, he was honorably discharged and began a lifetime career, fulfilling his love for working on engines. His career began at Stuart & Stevenson, working on diesel engines. His knowledge and attention to detail was recognized and raised him to heights he never thought possible.

Nat became a project developer and created a program to rebuild gas turbine engines, the first of its kind, and with his success, landed on the cover of TIME MAGAZINE. His proudest accomplishment came from the career growth of his apprentices. Nat taught young men the skills that supported them for life and earned their love and respect in return.

In his later years, Nat Cartmell, enjoyed working with engines and building furniture and loved spending time visiting family and friends. He was also active in supporting American freedoms through his words and writings.

As Nat himself would say, "I can fix or mend anything but a broken heart." Everyone who knew Nat Cartmell knew he was a master craftsman, teacher, and honorable family man and loyal friend.
