Melvin was known for his love of music, playing the guitar and singing in his own country and western bands most of his life. He sang songs by numerous artists such as Elvis Presley, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams, therefore to some he was nicknamed Hank, Merle or Melvis. He also enjoyed fishing especially with his granddaughter Lauren. Lauren was his pride and joy lovingly known as "Papa's Little Angel". Melvin could repair and invent just about anything. Lauren always said that "Papa could fix anything". Melvin was one of Needville High School's best football running backs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife's parents Henry & Vlasta Hurta, and his brother-in-law Ed Hurta. He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 50 years, Norma, his daughter, Raquel Levy, his son-in-law Linc Levy, his daughter Rhonda Mason, his granddaughter, Lauren Levy, his brother, Larry Condel, his half-brother, Randy Krobot (Prissy), his sisters-in-law, Donna Stavinoha (Tom), Joan Wendt (Ralph), Vivian Sabrsula, Aleene Brinkmeyer, and numerous nephews, nieces and extended family.

Pallbearers are Bradley Stavinoha, Tom Stavinoha, Ryan Vogler, James Vogler, Bobby Hurta, Eddie Hurta, Darwin Brinkmeyer and Alan Brinkmeyer.

Visitation will be Thursday, December 3, 2020, from 5-7 PM at Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors Chapel, 3103 School Street, Needville, Texas 77461 . A private family Funeral Service will be 2 PM Friday, December 4, 2020, at Garmany & Carden Funeral Directors Chapel in Needville, TX, with a private family graveside following at Needville Public Cemetery, Needville, TX.
