Mary Louise
Snell Delong
Aug 29, 1928 — Mar 15, 2024
Sugar Land
Mary Louise Snell DeLong, of Sugar Land, died peacefully in her sleep on March 15, 2024. She was 95.
"Lulu" to her beloved grandchildren and girls, she was born Aug. 29, 1928, in Morgan City, Louisiana, the third of four children born to Leroy Snell and Jeanette Greenwood. She was a fiercely proud graduate of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, earning two bachelor's degrees before returning to Morgan City to teach high school. She cherished her ULALA professors, particularly Professor Flowers, and she loved learning. Her high school students adored her, and she loved serving as the yearbook sponsor and the unofficial mascot of the basketball team's "Snelly Five." Hilarious and unscripted with a beautiful singing voice, Lulu was a proud Southerner and devoted grammarian. As a young girl she spent many happy days and long summers on her grandparents' estate, working in their general store and helping her grandmother in whatever ways she could. She misses them still. She married Dale Elmer DeLong, her first and last big love, and they moved to Lafayette, Midland, Texas, and Metairie, LA, before settling in Houston to raise three daughters: Laurie Allison Kane (Rick), Janis Kay Horvath (Rockne), and Rebecca Jane Aydelotte (Roderick). As a young mother, Lulu sacrificed greatly for her parents, moving them from Louisiana to Houston so she could care for them until their deaths. In later years she was happiest when surrounded by her children and grandchildren; Connor (Jennifer), Joanna and Alec (Kenzie) Horvath; Jake (Brandi), Caroline and Mackenzie Kane; and Jack and Olivia Aydelotte. And she is correcting your grammar as you read this.
A private memorial service at Texas A&M's Aggie Field of Honor is pending.
