Obituary

Marjorie Helen Winans Beard passed away peacefully at Colonial Oaks in Sugar Land, Texas, on February 2, 2018, with her loving family by her side. The beloved mother and grandmother was known simply as "Bama" to her grandchildren, "Zizzy" to her Winans family and "Margie" to her Beard family. Marjorie was born on August 27, 1921, in Brownsville, Texas, to Helen Stilwell Winans, the daughter of early pioneer settlers in the Rio Grande Valley, and LeRoy Boorn Winans.

Marjorie was the second of 6 children who all grew up in Brownsville, Texas. Marjorie attended Brownsville High School and graduated in 1939. While in high school, she was the President of the National Honor Society, Drill Major, Co-Business Manager of the Palmetto (school annual) and a member of the Greater Brownsville High School Club. Marjorie was also voted 'The Best All Around Girl' and 'Outstanding Senior' her senior year.

After graduation, Marjorie continued her education at Brownsville Junior College and graduated in 1941. After graduation from junior college, Marjorie met the love of her life, Leldon Foy Beard when he was in Brownsville training to be a Flight Engineer for Pan American World Airways. She and Leldon married on August 7, 1942, and were married 67 years until his death in 2009. While married to Leldon, they were fortunate to have lived and traveled all over the world. After Marjorie and Leldon were married, they were transferred to Miami, then New Orleans where their first daughter, Linda Kay was born, then to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where their second daughter Cheryl Ann was born, and then to New York.

In 1952, Marjorie and Leldon moved back to Leldon's ancestral family home in Rosenberg, Texas, where they lived while Leldon commuted to Houston to fly his routes to the Far East and Central America. Marjorie and Leldon remained in the Rosenberg/Richmond area until Leldon's death in 2009, when Marjorie moved to The Terrace in Sugar Land, Texas, and then eventually to Colonial Oaks at First Colony in Sugar Land, Texas. While living in Rosenberg, Leldon and Marjorie were among the founding members of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and devoted their lives to the church and its mission, where Marjorie found her passion in St. Mark's Altar Guild.

In addition to her church work, Marjorie also loved being involved in the Rosenberg Women's Club and playing bridge with her friends. Marjorie's life was one of faith, family and friends. She was devoted to caring for her husband Leldon, especially in his later life, her children and grandchildren through the years, and maintained many lifelong friendships until her death.

Marjorie is survived by her daughters, Linda Beard Madeira and husband Bill, and Cheryl Beard Jeter; grandchildren, Lesli Madeira Cushing (Dean); Jeffrey Madison Jeter (Amy); Brent Beard Madeira; Jonathan Beard Jeter ( Kate); and James William Jeter (Sandy); great-grandchildren, Tyler Marc Cushing and Abbey Lee Cushing; Allison Paige Jeter; Sawnie Christopher Jeter and Jacqueline Foy Jeter. Marjorie is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carolyn Winans (Lionel) of Dallas; her half-sister, Nancy Winans Baily of Richardson; and her sister-in-law, Carolyn Winans (Robert Reed) of Corpus Christi, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and family members from both the Beard and Winans families.

Marjorie is predeceased in death by her husband, Leldon Foy Beard, her mother, Helen Louise Stilwell Winans, her father, LeRoy Boorn Winans, and her siblings, Gretchen Christine Winans, Duncan Stilwell Winans, LeRoy Boorn Winans, Jr., Lionel LaMoure Winans, and Robert Reed Winans.
