She met Lloyd Engelhardt, her lifelong love, when she was only 16, and ten months later on August 25, 1953, they were married at the Shepherd Drive Methodist Church in Houston, TX. She volunteered with HOSTS (Help One Child To Succeed) for several years at Bowie Elementary, was a docent for Fort Bend Museum, helped with ESL (English as a second language) at her church, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, through her late stepfather, Anton Muzny.
