Lucille Evaline
Freund
Feb 15, 1931 — Sep 4, 2020
Needville
Lucille Kettenhofen Freund, 89 of Needville, Texas, went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 4, 2020 in Richmond, Texas. Lucille was born February 15, 1931 in Appleton, Wisconsin to parents Alma and Walter Kettenhofen.
She graduated from Sweetwater Union High School in National City, California on June 12, 1949. After graduation, she worked as a legal secretary and in her spare time she performed in theater plays.
In 1952, Lucille met the love of her life of 64 years, James Freund while he was stationed in the United States Marine Corp in San Diego. Shortly after they met, James mailed Lucille an engagement ring and she then boarded a train to Needville, Texas to live the next chapter in her life. She moved in with her future sister in law, Evelyn Freund, where she lived until the day she and James married, July 18, 1952. Lucille was employed at First State Bank in Needville until she and James started raising a family. She then became a full time mother of 4 boys and a farmer's wife, which sometimes required her making tough decisions on the farm operation while James was working at his main job at the Philips Refinery in Sweeny Texas. Even with all of this hard work, Lucille managed to cook large meals to feed "the crew." While handling this huge task, Lucille also served her church as a Sunday school teacher for many years, sang in the church choir, served on various church committees and helped with church fundraisers, and also was very active in the Ruth Circle Ladies Group at Needville United Methodist Church. As busy as she was she still managed to raise a vegetable garden and do home canning from her garden's bounty.
Lucille loved her family deeply and loved spending time with them. She enjoyed deer hunting and loved going on hunting trips with the family. She also loved her "church family" and enjoyed greatly her time singing in the church choir. Lucille had a kind heart and was a stranger to no one. She loved to welcome everyone and always had a smile on her face.
Lucille is survived by her four sons; Steve Freund, Paul and wife Linda, John and wife Tammi, Thomas and wife Erin, her brother; George Kettenhofen and wife Kathie, grandchildren; Kirsten Freund-Dell (Allen), Dakota Freund (Brittney), Ryan Freund (Kimber), Cadell Freund, Dionne Freund, Jonathan Watson (Kortney), Jamie Carr (Shannon), Roxanne Underwood and Nicole Wolfe (James) ; 8 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her loving church family. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James Freund, her parents; Alma & Walter Kettenhofen, sister; Rita Schmidt, brother; Eugene and wife Rosa, brothers in law; Homer Freund and Cecil Freund, and daughter in law; Debbie Baca Freund.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2020 at Needville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 8602 Church Street from 10:00-10:45 a.m. with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will be at the Needville United Methodist Church Cemetery, Needville-Fairchild Rd.
