Lee Fred Altimore of Needville, Texas passed away July 17, 2015 in Sugarland, Texas at the age of 82. He was born on February 8, 1933.
Lee attended school in Needville but it didn't take long until the lure of working and playing in the great outdoors enticed him to leave school at an early age. He later received his GED.
When he was old enough to enter, Lee joined the US Navy and served aboard the USS Walton during the Korean War. His time in the military was the source of many entertaining stories and a source of deep pride, especially in his later years.
After his honorable discharge from the military, Lee started searching for his direction in life. He met Helen Oberrender on a blind date and set the course for the rest of his life. The two were married on March 1, 1959 and spent the next 56 years together sharing life, love, and raising their four children. At their 50 year anniversary celebration, Lee gave his soulmate all the credit for keeping the family strong through rough times.
Early in his career Lee had several jobs including a supervisor at an aluminum plant and working on a traveling seismograph crew. He couldn't stand spending so much time traveling and away from his family so he landed a job with the Texas Highway Department. There he worked as a supervisor for highway construction jobs for 23 years until his retirement in 1989. After retirement, he couldn't sit still and worked for Paul Freund driving tractors, picking cotton, and helping around the farm.
Lee loved his hobbies of hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He was always full of jokes and stories and all one had to do was sit down and listen and you could be entertained for hours. Later in life he enjoyed playing poker, doing crossword puzzles, or being the fix-it man around the house.
Lee was an active member of American Legion Post 350 where he found many close friends that shared common experiences. He served many years as Post Finance Officer, bar-b-que'd many chickens, and he and Helen enjoyed social interaction of game nights at the Legion Hall.
Lee leaves behind his wife Helen, son Leonard and wife Beverly, son Mike and wife Debbie, daughter Charlotte Aguilar and husband Ruben, and daughter Wanda Eiteman and husband John, all of Needville.
