Surrounded by his loving family and spiritually supported by countless friends, John Dwain Barnes passed from this life to the next on Saturday, October 31, 2015, following a brief battle with cancer. He had been a dedicated member of the congregation at Christ Church Sugar Land.
Dwain was born in Houston, Texas on November 2, 1945 and was the only child of John D. Barnes and Rosa Lee Wieghat Barnes. Shortly after Dwain's birth, the family moved to Rocky Mount, N.C. to work on the family tobacco farm. Dwain attended school in Rocky Mount and helped his parents on the farm until they returned to Rosenberg Texas in 1955. Dwain spent the remainder of his life in Fort Bend County.
Dwain attended Wharton Junior College where he played both baseball and basketball. He finished his college education at Sam Houston State University where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity and a star pitcher on the Bearkats' baseball team. His teammates say he could throw a wicked curveball. Dwain graduated from Sam Houston State University in 1968.
Following graduation, Dwain briefly taught and coached at a number of schools in the Fort Bend area. However, driven by a strong entrepreneurial spirit, Dwain soon left coaching and established his own business as an independent State Farm Agent in 1972. He has successfully served the needs of thousands of Fort Bend County residents for the past 43 years and has built one of the largest independent agencies in the area.
Dwain's number one priority in life has always been his family. He met the love of his life, Lynn Mary Tobin, in 1990 and they married in 1992. Their loving 23-year relationship will remain an inspiration to all their family and friends. Dwain has been devoted to his twin sons, Bret and Chad, and to his only daughter, Chrisi and his two grandsons, Trenton and Korbin. They have always known "Pops" would be at every sporting event and at their call whenever needed. There was nothing more important in his life. Dwain's family and friends will remember him as a kind, gentle and humble man with an infectious personality and gracious heart.
Dwain is preceded in death by his father, John D. Barnes and his mother Rosa Lee Wieghat Barnes. He is survived by his loving wife, Lynn Barnes; his son and daughter-in-law, Bret and Sarah Barnes; son and daughter-in-law, Chad and Jenina Barnes; daughter and son-in-law, Chrisi and Jason Harris; grandsons, Trenton and Korbin Barnes; aunts, Lily Bishop and Leona Griffith; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dan and Sharon Feehan; niece, Cari Feehan; nephew and his wife, Chad and Julie Feehan; and great-nieces, Genevieve and Reese Harz and Stella Ray Feehan.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at Methodist Hospital Sugar Land for the care administered to Dwain and the family in the weeks preceding his death.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Epilepsy Foundation of Texas, 2630 Fountainview, Suite 210, Houston, Texas 77057.
