Joel Chavez

April 5, 1946 - December 23, 2023

Joel Chavez, a beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2023, at the age of 77, surrounded by his loving family in Sugar Land, Texas.

Born on April 5, 1946, he was raised in a tight-knit family of five children in Harlingen, Texas, to the parents of Pablo and Aurora Chavez. He attended Harlingen High School, then went on to pursue higher education at Pan American University, earning a degree of Bachelors Industrial Arts. After graduation he entered the Marine Corps for a tour of duty in Vietnam. Upon return he continued his education with a Masters in Counseling at Southwest Texas State University. Joel was a constant advocate for education which he carried over as a father in his unwavering support of his children's higher education.

While working as an instructor for the blind in Austin, Texas, he crossed paths with the love of his life, Gay, and six months later, they began their lifelong journey together in marriage. He then moved on to dedicate over four decades to a successful career in human resources at the Veterans Administration Hospital serving countless veterans during their times of need. In addition to his professional endeavors, Joel generously volunteered as a poll worker during local elections, further contributing to his community.

Joel was known for his warmth, kindness, and curiosity about the world. His great sense of humor and genuine interest in people's stories and perspectives endeared him to all who knew him. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening, spending time with family, fishing, shotgun sports, and was an avid reader. He held a profound love for genealogy, a pursuit that added rich layers to his understanding of heritage and family history.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Gay and their two children - Stuart and Kelly - and four grandchildren Marcelo, Mason, Mateo, and Tyler. As a devoted husband, father, and grandfather his unwavering support and guidance enriched the lives of his family.

In roles ranging from teacher and public servant to soldier, mentor, volunteer, father, and grandfather, Joel's impact was profound. His devotion to others and his commitment to making our community a better place were not just actions; they were reflections of a compassionate and caring soul. The warmth of his spirit will continue to touch and uplift the lives of those who were fortunate enough to share in his journey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the United Way, Joel's charity of choice. Joel will be buried at the Houston National Cemetery.
