Obituary

Janice Sue Ratliff Matejka, 70, of Needville, Texas, passed away on May 10, 2026. Jan was a strong woman who loved deeply, spoke honestly, and never left people guessing where they stood with her. She loved her family fiercely and took pride in caring for the people around her in the ways she knew best — through hard work, good food, open doors, and unwavering loyalty.

Jan loved fishing, cooking, canning, and gathering people around her table. Her home was rarely quiet and never short on food. If you walked through her door, you were family, and you were going to eat. As Jan often said, "If you leave hungry, it's your own fault."

To her grandchildren, she was simply "Meme." Strong, dependable, and full of grit, Meme showed her love through action. She was the kind of grandmother who made sure everyone was cared for, fed well, and knew exactly where they stood with her. Her family always knew they could count on her.

Jan is survived by her loving husband, David Matejka; her son, Keith Urbanek and wife Marissa; and her daughter, Christine Farquhar and husband Chad.

She was a proud grandmother to Seth Farquhar and wife Kayleigh, Garrett Urbanek and Brynn Bostnik, Hannah Farquhar Wicke and husband Aiden, Ashley Urbanek and Kaden Sparks, Joshua Farquhar and Brylee Johnson, and Damali Ortiz and Carter Johnson

She was also blessed with her precious great-granddaughter, Maisie Kay Farquhar.

Jan also leaves behind her father-in-law, Edward Matejka, and mother-in-law, Margaret Matejka.

She loved her brothers and sisters deeply, as well as all of her nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in her life.

She was preceded in death by her father, Wayne Ratliff; her mother, Naomi Kerr Tiner; her brother, Ricky Ratliff; and her nephew, Adam Westbrook.
