Born in Baton Rouge to PD and Alta Witty, he served a brief stint in the Merchant Marines during WWII, running supplies and troops to foreign shores, across both the Pacific and Atlantic (even delivered Marines to Iwo Jima). His tour ended when the war ended, after which he attended Louisiana State University. That period provided fond memories for him, where he formed bonds with Deke fraternity brothers.

He served nearly 40 years in the oil & gas related sectors, for a number of firms, in marketing capacities, initially in New York, then eventually moving to the Houston area (Missouri City), with an early retirement, and a final residence in Richmond.
