Funeral services for Herbert Otto Richter, 87, of Needville, TX, will be held at 2:00 PM Friday, August 16, 2013, at Immanuel United Church of Christ, 9018 Church Street, Needville, TX 77461, with Pastor Tom Schwartz officiating. Interment will follow at the Immanuel United Church of Christ Cemetery, Needville, TX.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 - 8:00 PM, Thursday, August 15, 2013, at Garmany Funeral Chapel, 3103 School Street, Needville, TX 77461.

Herbert was born February 15, 1926, in Rosenberg, Texas to Adolph and Hulda Tiemann Richter. He passed away August 12, 2013 in Richmond with his family by his side after a long battle with cancer.

Herbert is preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Hulda Richter; brother, Otto Richter; sister, Elsie Mahlmann; and brother-in-law John Mahlmann.

He is survived by his loving wife of 65 ½ years, Lillie Oberhoff Richter; sister-in-law, Lariese Meyen and husband Frank; sons, Roger Dale and wife Renee, Michael Allen and wife Shirley, Donald Neal and wife Marsha. Herbert is also survived by his seven grandchildren; Ronald Wayne and wife Bobby, Cheryl Lynn and husband Kenneth, Kimberly Ann and husband William, Crystal Alaine and husband Adam, Leah Nicole and husband Rudy, Christopher Neal and wife Mandi, and Timothy Charles and wife Lindsey. He is also survived by sixteen great-grandchildren; Jacob Daniel, Jade Austin, Emma Neal, Alexis Renee, Shae Ashley, Christopher James, Kaleb Michael, Rudy Neal, Jillian Nicole, Faith Ann, Grey Neal, Madalyn Grace, Adrian Jose, Anthony Edward, Keegan Lane, and Corbin Alexander, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.


Herbert worked for Fort Bend County for eleven years and WKM in Richmond for twenty-six years. He retired in 1988.


Herbert was a member of the Needville Volunteer Fire Department since 1949. He was actively making fire calls until 2011. During his time with the department Herbert served as treasurer for twenty of those years.

He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Needville. Herbert served three terms on the church's consistory. He also served as head usher, was a member of the cemetery board, and a member of the brotherhood. He served as secretary and president with the brotherhood.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ronald Richter, Kenneth Neal, William March, Adam Smith, Rudy Hernandez, Christopher Richter, Timothy Richter, and Jacob Richter. Members of the Needville Volunteer Fire Department will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Herbert's memory to the Needville Volunteer Fire Department or Immanuel United Church of Christ Cemetery Fund.
