Obituary

H. Gregory "Greg" Knauth, age 84, long-time resident of Rosenberg, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at Clayton Oaks Living, with his wife, Ann O. Knauth, by his side, after a long illness. Greg was born on July 3, 1932 in Dallas, Texas to Herbert R. and Bessie Lewis Knauth.

Greg grew up in Joinerville, Texas and graduated from Gaston High School as the Valedictorian in 1950. He had one sister, Eleanor Knauth Morgan, of Longview, Texas. In 1954, Greg obtained his undergraduate degree in economics from Rice Institute in Houston, Texas and then served in the U.S. Navy on the USA Hancock from 1954-1956. With the help of the GI Bill, Greg obtained his law degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1958.

He met his wife, Ann O. Knauth, in Houston, Texas, while working as a title attorney at Shell Oil Company. They married in Houston on July 16, 1960 and then moved to Tyler, Texas with Shell. In 1963, they relocated with their growing family to Rosenberg, Texas, where Greg joined Rosenberg Title Company and established his law practice at 912 Fourth Street in Rosenberg, where he served clients for almost 40 years.

For many years, Greg was very active in civic organizations in Rosenberg, serving in the Jaycees and the Rotary Club, of which he was President and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also a long-time member of the City of Rosenberg Planning Commission, and a member of the Rosenberg City Council. Greg served for many years as an Elder, Trustee, and in many other capacities in the Presbyterian Church, of which he was a life-long member.

At age 50, Greg went on his first hiking/backpacking trip to Big Bend National Park—hiking and backpacking became a passion that he pursued well into his 70s, exploring the mountains of New Mexico, Colorado, Oregon and the Appalachian Trail. Greg was a life-long learner, pursuing the study of New Testament Greek, German and Spanish and participating in a monthly book club for many years. He and Ann enjoyed traveling together—highlights included finding the original Knauth Family home in Germany, as well as many trips to their beloved Abiquiu, New Mexico.

In addition to his wife of almost 57 years, Ann Orts Knauth, Greg is survived by his children, Jennifer Knauth Knight, Claire Knauth and Alix Knauth, all of Austin, Texas; grandchildren Benjamin Lipinski, of Chicago, Illinois; and Luke Lipinski and Auguste Knauth, of Austin, Texas.

The Knauth Family would like to express special and heart-felt thanks to the staff at Clayton Oaks Living and Houston Hospice-El Campo for their dedication and loving care of Greg over the past several years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Houston Hospice-El Campo or Rice University.
