Obituary

Gregory Mark Herman

Richmond, TX

Gregory Mark Herman, affectionately known as Mark, left this world on December 28, 2024, at the age of 73. At the time of his passing he lived in Richmond, TX. Born on October 17, 1951, in Princeton, IN, Mark spent his life dedicated to his family, community, and a career in law enforcement that spanned over five decades.

Mark's career began when he joined the Houston Police Academy at the age of 19, and worked Patrol for Houston PD. He served with distinction at Missouri City PD, Bellaire PD, Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office as a Homicide Detective, and the Fort Bend County District Attorney's office as a Criminal Investigator, where he eventually retired. Not one to sit idle, Mark volunteered his time as a Reserve Officer at Montgomery County Constable, Pct 2.  He continued to serve as a Bailiff at Bellaire PD, proving his unwavering commitment to his work and community.

In 1985, Mark married the love of his life, Barbara, with whom he built a warm and loving home with four children: Patrick, Christy, Andrew, and Beth. Mark's world revolved around his family, and he was the quintessential husband, father, and grandaddy, always ensuring that each Christmas was nothing short of magical. He worked tirelessly, often juggling extra jobs to provide for his family and create memorable experiences for his cherished grandkids in his later years. He loved traveling with his wife around the country visiting family, and touring National Parks and civil war battlegrounds.

Mark was a man who never met a stranger. His great sense of humor, and ability to strike up a 45-minute conversation with someone he just met were just some of the traits that endeared him to so many. He loved to vocalize in annoyance just how "unrealistic" any movie containing law enforcement was. He felt it was his duty to surveil every parking lot he entered and to hold open doors for people like he was getting paid to do it. He enjoyed experimenting with cooking and lovingly forcing hesitant family members to try his new concoctions like fried bananas that left some of us traumatized.

Whether it was teasing those he loved as a sign of affection, or his daily trips to the grocery store to chat with every employee, Mark's kindness and genuine interest in helping others left a lasting impression.

A Master Mason, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and Shriner, Mark's commitment to service extended beyond his professional life. His community involvement and faith as a devout Christian was a testament to his character and the values he held dear. He was also an amazingly talented artist. He spent years sculpting a magnificent George Washington statue cast in bronze, created beautiful stained-glass windows, created comic strips, and illustrated newspaper advertisements for local businesses in his younger years.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Herman, his children Patrick Herman, Christy Lawless, Andrew Herman, and Beth Matthys; son-in-laws Jason Lawless and Justin Matthys, daughter-in-law, Kelly Herman. Grandchildren, Brittany Roeper, Kelli Herman, Haley Herman, Kara Herman-Jaramillo, Kalvin Herman, Jeremy Matthys, Jayden Lawless, Jackson Lawless, Hannah Matthys, and Emma Matthys. His Greatgrandchild, Ivy Gutierrez. His sister, Loyce Bodine. Niece and Nephews, Micah Bodine, Angela Bodine, and Devin Bodine.  Mark was preceded in death by his loving parents, Estella and Lloyd Herman, and brother Alyn Brent Herman.

A celebration of Mark's life will be held at River Pointe Church in Richmond, TX, on Friday, April 25th. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., followed by a service at 11 a.m., 21000 Southwest Freeway, Richmond, TX 77469.

Mark's life was a testament to hard work, love, friendship and community service. He touched the lives of many and will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Mark leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter.
