Obituary

Garlan Dean Shows, 55, journeyed from this temporary life and entered into the eternal life promised by Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior, whom he served faithfully.

Garlan was born November 1, 1961, in Wharton, TX, to Billie and Elaine Shows. He passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, January 29, 2017. His plans every Sunday were to attend church and play bass in the orchestra, but God decided that Heaven needed his talents more.

He graduated in 1980 from Lamar Consolidated and earned an Associate's Degree from WCJC. He worked at the W.A. Parish Plant for NRG and this June would have been his 35th year of service. His co-workers nicknamed him Doc, after impressing them with his lunchtime basketball skills, that mimicked Dr. J. He had many other talents and interests, which included off-shore fishing, golf, video games, and football. He was an avid Baylor Bears fan and loved his Dallas Cowboys, referring to them as "God's team". He had a love for music and expressed it by playing his trombone, bass guitar, or piano. While he enjoyed a wide range of music, Blues and Jazz were his favorites, as well as top artists like Stevie Ray Vaughn, BB King, Eric Clapton, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, and Muddy Waters.

Garlan married Judie DeShazo September 24,1983. They met when she visited his church and he said he could not take his eyes off of her. The following day, they crossed paths at a Christian Family Skate Night. During a couples only song, he asked her to skate and they have been skating through life ever since.

Garlan believed in God and Family, faithfully putting them above all else. He was an ever-present and devoted father to his two sons, Scott Landon and Drew Ernest Shows. When Drew married Liz, she became the daughter he never had. Elation grew with the birth of his granddaughter, Isabella Baylor Shows. He was overjoyed to be Papa to his Izzy; even if it was a short 22 months.

Waiting for him in Heaven were his twin boys, Tyler and Travis Shows; grandparents, Ernest and Elnora Elliston; Rev. W.B. and Elnor Shows; and uncle, Gene Shows.

Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Judie Shows; sons, Scott Shows; Drew Shows and his wife, Elisabeth; granddaughter, Izzy Shows; parents, Billie and Elaine Shows; sister, Susan Marler and husband Russell; along with numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; his beloved church family at Friendship, where he had been a charter member his entire life; and many wonderful friends.
