Obituary

Eugene George Kubelka was born in Fort Bend County on October 4, 1946, to Willie A. Kubelka and Annie Knesek Kubelka. He passed away on October 22, 2026, at the age of 80.

He spent his early years living on the Kubelka family farm near Turkey Creek and Beasley, Texas. He spent many memorable times at the creek with his older brother Stan. Gene and Stan were two years apart, but they were like twins as they were always together. In 1958, the family moved to a farm in Burleson County near Somerville, Texas. There he worked on the farm where cotton, corn, and milo were grown, along with raising pigs, cattle, and chickens. He often joked that after growing up around chickens, he never wanted to eat one, and he didn't.

Gene attended Somerville High School where he earned All-State honors in football. He received a football scholarship to Texas A&I University in Kingsville, Texas, where he played on two national championship teams. He graduated in 1971 with a degree in Natural Gas Engineering. He moved to Houston and worked in many phases of the oil and gas industry until his retirement in 2018.

Gene was an avid reader and history buff, especially Texas history. He enjoyed gardening and was quite proud of his garden. He also was a gifted woodworker. Gene was a wonderful husband, son, and brother. He was always available to help his parents with whatever needed to be done. Gene had a genuine desire to see his family succeed and was always there to help his siblings find jobs during and after college.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of 53 years, Kay Sparks Kubelka, his sisters, Bernadette Hurta (Edward) and Martha Grygar (David), and many nieces, nephews and their children. Gene will also be greatly missed by his cat Bo (aka Kitty). He bought Bo for Kay for Valentine's Day in 2011 and, of course, Gene became his very favorite person.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mary Jane Kocurek, and brother, Stanley Kubelka.
