In loving memory of Ella Elizabeth Walenta Owens, who died peacefully and serenely at her home in Rosenberg at the age of 97. Ella was born on January 21, 1920 in Fairchilds, Texas to parents Frank Walenta and Rosie Stefka Walenta. She died Saturday, August 12, 2017. She was the fourth child and always the baby of the family. A lifetime resident of Rosenberg, she attended Robert E. Lee Elementary School and Rosenberg High School. She played basketball, cheered, and is the last surviving member of her graduating class.
She met and fell in love with Horace George Owens, Jr at the local skating rink and married in 1933 in the Presbyterian Church. Her parents were founding members of this church and it was a vital part of her life. An excellent seamstress, she designed many prom gowns and wedding dresses, and tailored many suits and jackets. Her work experience included the Rosenberg Telephone Company and Fort Bend Federal where she was one of three employees. An exceptional cook, Ella was well known for her homemade kolaches, rolls, and chicken and dumplings. She found her calling as a dental assistant to Dr. P. Lamar Meadows Sr. She continued to provide valuable skills for Dr. Lamar Meadows Jr. and Dr. John Cardwell. After forty years of dedicated and devoted service, Mrs. O retired at age 90 leaving many memories, friends, and tales to tell.
She had the sweetest smile, prettiest blue eyes, a great sense of humor, and infectious giggle. A loving and kind woman, she had great strength and a giving spirit. She had her great-grandchildren believing she was rich, giving away all her quarters.
She is preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 60 years, Horace George Owens, Jr, her precious son, Horace George Owens III, her daughter-in-law Betty Owens, son-in-law Dr. Michael T. McCann, her brother Ernest Walenta, and sisters Libby Luksa and Olga Luksa.
