Edgar Wendt went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 16, 2018, after a four year battle with Alzheimer's.  Edgar was born in Needville, Texas to Edwin and Rosa (Blome) Wendt on April 29, 1937.  After graduating from Needville High School in 1955, he went to Wharton County Jr College and then started his lifelong career in the car business.  He worked at Hopmann Chevrolet and Joe Grillo Chevy Olds Dodge until his retirement in 1997.  He sold hundreds of vehicles over his career and loved dealing with people.  He was a very generous and kind man and even financed some vehicles himself to those that could not obtain financing from banks.  There are many people who have never purchased a vehicle from anyone other than Edgar in their lifetime.

Being a father and grandfather was something Edgar cherished.  He spent many hours mentoring his children and grandchildren in how to live a good life.  He had custody and raised his three children at a time when that was rare for a man.  He passed on his Christian beliefs to his children and was an excellent example of what a good and decent person should be.

He also passed on his deep passion for the game of baseball.  Edgar played fast pitch softball until he was over seventy years old.  He was an accomplished pitcher, even being inducted into the Softball Hall of Fame in 2017.  His love of the game was immense.  In the latter years, he had to travel to Houston to play as there were no fast pitch teams left in the Needville area.  He has over 50 trophies, spanning the years from 1962-1995.  All of his children and three of his grandchildren played under his watchful eye.

Baseball was his true love, but he also played competitive basketball in the wintertime and loved to play cards and dominoes, especially 42 with his friends and family.  But make no mistake, it didn't matter if you were family or a seven year old child, he played to win!!

Mr. Wendt was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, his parents Edwin and Rosa, his sister Rose Rabata and his brother Ernest.  Edgar is survived by his three children, Mark Wendt and his wife Nancy of Needville, Lana Hoepner and her husband David of Lavon, Texas and Wade Wendt and his wife Shelley of Needville.  He has seven grandchildren that he adored, Caleb Wendt and fiancé Rachel of Needville, Whitney (Wendt) Anderson and her husband Joseph Jr. of Needville, Demi (Wendt) Singletary and her husband Reed of Pampa, Garrett Hanson and his wife Megan of Bryan, Grant Hanson of West Columbia, Mitchell and Nolan Wendt of Needville.  He also is survived by two great grandsons, Gregory and Rhys Hanson of Bryan and a great grand daughter,  Peyton Gough of Needville.  Edgar is also survived by two brothers, Delbert Wendt of Needville, and Ralph Wendt and his wife Joan of Pleak.  There are also numerous nieces and nephews that he leaves behind.

The family wishes to thank Lauraine Ognoskie for the care and friendship she gave Edgar for many years and also Supreme Memory Care and Elizabeth Williams for the loving care that was given Edgar for the past three years.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
