Darlene Fuchs Mensik
Darlene Fuchs Mensik, 92, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at the S.P.J.S.T. Nursing Home in Needville, TX. She was born Darlene Fae Kuecke, in Guy, TX, on January 23, 1932, the youngest child of tenant farmers Willie and Lydia. Darlene was shaped by faith, hard work, and a simple life. She was a life-long member of Immanuel Evangelical Church, where she was baptized and confirmed. She attended school in Damon, Long Point, and Seiler, and then high school in Beasley, graduating from Rosenberg High School in 1948. After graduation, she went to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.
In 1950, Darlene married Kirby Lawrence Fuchs at Immanuel. As a wife and mother, Darlene cared deeply for her family. Busy with many tasks, she was always the first one to wake up in the morning and the last to go to bed at night. She both worked in the fields alongside her husband and children, and kept the home, preparing three full meals for the family each day.
After her husband, Kirby, died in 1978, Darlene left her job at Woolworths to help harvest her husband's last crop. She went to work for Needville ISD, first as a nurse's aide at the middle school, and later as a secretary at the elementary school where she was known to the children as the lady who collected their lunch tickets and money. She retired in 1999.
In 1992, she married John Joseph Mensik at Immanuel. They enjoyed dancing and stateside travels until his passing in 2000.
Darlene was most proud of her family. She was "Nannaw" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she shared with them her stories and knowledge from a time in this world that has faded away.
Darlene was the last of her generation in her family. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; an infant brother, Willie; a sister, Lillie Mae Gragert; son-in-law, O.W. Kunkel; and all of her brothers and sisters-in-law.
Survivors include a son, Kevon Fuchs of Needville; a daughter, Brenda Kunkel of Sargent; grandsons, Cody Kalkomey (Lorrie Jones), Kirby Kunkel, Fr. Kristopher Fuchs, Jayson Fuchs and his wife Maggie, Dylan Fuchs and his wife Kerbe; great-grandchildren Branson Kalkomey and his wife Madelyn, Caleb Fuchs, Rachel Fuchs, Waylon Fuchs, and Nathan Fuchs; as well as stepsons, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Darlene was also expecting another great-grandchild and her first great-great-grandchild.
The family is grateful for the care that the staff at S.P.J.S.T. was able to give to Darlene this year.
