Arthur John Dorr was born June 22, 1952, in Crowley, La., to parents Arnold J. and Theresa Dorr. He died Wednesday, August 12, 2015, in Richmond following a lengthy, courageous battle with renal cell carcinoma.

A.J. is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Sandra Todd Dorr, of Needville; son Michael Poe and wife Stephanie of Needville; daughter Alexis Dorr of Needville and fiancé Jimmy Deremer of Katy; daughter Andrea Dorr of Houston; grandchildren Kelton and Keylan Poe of Needville and Audrey Dorr of Houston; father Arnold J. Dorr; sister Linda Robison and husband Ken of Wheelock; mother and father-in-law Juanita and Walter Todd of Needville; brothers and sisters in-law and families W.C. and Karen Todd of Needville, Mitchell and Tracy Todd of Frisco, and Cody and Wendy Todd of Needville; sister-in-law Shirley Hlavaty of Needville; brother-in-law and family Ken Hoelewyn of Damon; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as dear friends and coworkers.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Theresa Dorr, of Needville; brother, Arnold J. Dorr Jr.; and sister, Margaret Hoelewyn.

A.J. and his family moved to Needville when he was only 2 years old. He served his beloved community in countless ways for decades, and received numerous awards and accolades during that time. Among them was his January, 2014, designation as Citizen of the Year by the Needville Area Chamber of Commerce. He received the award for such selfless acts as coordinating numerous food and toy drives, making Christmas possible for countless local children, volunteering with Needville Senior Citizens, and serving as auction chair for various events.

A.J. was a Needville Youth Fair director from 1987-2013, serving as president twice during that time. He was a past president of the Fort Bend County Fair Association and a lifetime member of the organization, serving on its board of directors for many years. Each year, he treated residents of the Fort Bend County Women's Center to an evening at the Fair, complete with a meal and carnival rides, so the women and their children could forget their cares for a while.

He was past vice president of Immanuel United Church of Christ and a member of the board of directors of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. He was also a member of the Justice of the Peace and Constable's Association of Texas, and American Legion Post 350 in Needville.

The annual A.J. Dorr Golf Tournament in Greatwood has been a favorite benefit event for years, with the most recent recipient of its proceeds being the Fort Bend County Women's Center.

A.J. enlisted in the United States Marine Corps from 1970-1974, stationed in Quantico, Va. Upon his honorable discharge as a sergeant, he enrolled in Sam Houston State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice and political science.

After graduation, he entered the Houston Police Department (HPD) Training Academy, then worked in vice at HPD from 1977-1987. In 1987, he became police chief of Needville and remained in that position until being elected Fort Bend County Pct. 1 Constable in 1996. He took office the following year and has been reelected ever since.

Despite his illness, A.J. continued to treasure spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and never lost his love for children and the elderly, as well as his community.
