Albert "Al"
Michael Mangine
Aug 21, 1949 — Jan 19, 2021
Sugar Land
Albert "Al" Michael Mangine, avid outdoors man and loving husband, father, and papa, died January 19, 2021, with his loving wife, Cookie, by his side.
Al was born August 21, 1949, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he spent his childhood growing up surrounded by his brothers and extended family. Al attended North Catholic High School on the north side of Pittsburgh where he was an avid athlete and sports fan.
Al's love for football took him to John Carroll University where he played guard for the football team. Football was always a part of Al's life as a diehard Steelers and Texas Aggie fan. In 30 years, Al had never missed an Aggie season with Aggie sidekick, Ronnie Jackson.
His endless passion for the outdoors took Al on many hunting and fishing adventures with both family and friends. Whether it was Wyoming, Louisiana, Nebraska, Colorado, or New Zealand, Al never returned without a new story that all would be hearing on repeat. His many trips to the Ranch with Terry Norwood might have been his favorite of all.
Al will be remembered as a world class chef to many. When he was not out enjoying the hunt or snagging a red fish, he could be found indoors cooking something up for us to all enjoy. His grandkids will quickly argue whether his meatballs, lasagna, stuffed tenderloin, lamb chops, fried turkey or homemade pumpkin pie were the best but whatever they wanted, Papa would happily serve.
His friendships are the truest testament to the kind of man he was. Whether you knew Al from childhood, college, Houston Rodeo, the Friendswood gun club, hunting trips or from Cookie taking him to many family events, he was a friend to many and welcoming to all.
He and Cookie celebrated 31 years of marriage. Just recently Al shared with Cookie that she had given him the three best gifts of his life and then added six amazing grandchildren. His grandchildren loved hunting and fishing with their Papa. The boys also loved sitting and watching him work on refinishing gun stocks, his favorite at home hobby. And despite growing up in a house full of boys, he quickly adapted to watching his granddaughters' dance recitals, cheerleading performances and soccer games.
Al will be dearly missed by his wife, Cookie Mangine, children: Chris Hanslik, Amie Mangine Dean (Trace Dean), Haley Mangine White (Chris White), his grandchildren Hayden and Hollyn Hanslik, Harrison and Harper White, and Garrett and Cullen Dean, and his brothers Carl and Robert Mangine.
He is preceded in death by his father, Carl J. Mangine, his mother, Josephine Mangine, and his great nephew Matthew Mangine.
Services will by Monday at 10:00 am at St. Laurence Catholic Church, 3100 Sweetwater Blvd, Sugar Land, TX 77479 . Visitation will begin at 9:00 am before the service. There will be a private burial for family and close friends.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Al Mangine Memorial Fund at www.GoFundMe.com. All donations will be contributed to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo's scholarship fund where a scholarship will be named in Al's honor.
